Lille,
What are the origins of the city?
Over the centuries, the city of Lille (External link) has developed around the Deûle river. Located in the Plain of Flanders, the city has experienced many political influences and just as many cultures that can still be seen on the facades of the ancient heritage. Few cities exhibit such architectural variety: from Flanders to France via Burgundy
and Spain, Lille has established itself as an eclectic city, rich in the exchanges it has known and still knows. Sometimes commercial, sometimes industrial (19th and 20th centuries), Lille is today a city of services, business and tourism.

What are the must-see places to visit?
Culture
is at the heart of the city’s activity: the Palace of Fine Arts (External link) , one of the most important museums
de France, and Lille 3000 are the flagships.

Not to be missed either: the Rihour Palace and the Comtesse islet (External link); the Grand’ Place and the Old Stock Exchange; the Place du Théâtre and the belfry of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Note that the Euralille district, whose futuristic towers are organized around the Lille Europe TGV station, Lille Grand Palais and the Euralille shopping center, was designed by several renowned architects and urban planners: Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, Christian de Portzamparc, Claude Vasconi…

Right in the heart of Vieux-Lille, the Comtesse Hospice Museum (External link) is in itself a history of urban architecture from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. For more earthly foods: the Wazemmes market, one of the largest in France, and perhaps also one of the liveliest. It is not uncommon to hear a few accordion notes, in a bohemian and colorful atmosphere.
